News on May 10 South Korea recently launched the "X-band GaN National Plan" to sprint the third generation of semiconductors, and Samsung is actively participating. As the market is highly optimistic about the development of third-generation semiconductors, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd., World and other Taiwanese manufacturers have been stuck. Samsung joined the official plan of South Korea to sprint the layout of third-generation semiconductors, which also ignited new battles in the semiconductor industry.

The third-generation semiconductors are mainly related to two materials: gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). Many large manufacturers have invested decades in advance. In recent years, major manufacturers such as Apple, Xiaomi and Hyundai have announced their products. The plan to adopt new materials has made the third-generation semiconductor the focus of all walks of life.

At present, major manufacturers use different methods to enter the third-generation semiconductor business. In addition to traditional foundries, integrated component manufacturers (IDM) manufacturers, and even LED manufacturers, Epistar, and GaAs wafer foundry leaders are stable. Both are actively stuck. Among them, Jingdian has one-stop service capabilities, and Wenmao recently announced the expansion of Nanke's investment of 10 billion yuan in projects that also include this technology.

Prior to this April, the South Korean government released an advanced power semiconductor research and development and production capacity improvement plan.

Compared with traditional chips, power chips can handle larger voltages and currents. The Korean domestic market is currently about US$2 billion. Due to the lack of technology and patents, more than 90% of market demand depends on imports.

With the cooperation of the private sector, the South Korean government plans to raise its market competitiveness to a global level by 2025, so that by that year, South Korea will have at least five advanced power semiconductor products on the market. Committed to the application technology and technology of SiC, GaN, and Ga2O3 three materials, overcome the limitations of silicone materials, and assist domestic companies in the research and development of materials and chips.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea stated in a statement that it will establish a 6-8 inch manufacturing process with domestic foundries in order to expand related foundry services.

It is reported that the current global power semiconductor devices are mainly provided by three countries and regions in Europe, the United States, and Japan. They account for approximately 60% of the global market share by virtue of advanced technology, manufacturing processes, and leading quality management systems. Infineon and STMicroelectronics are not only representative companies in Europe, but also among the best in the world; in the United States, ON Semiconductor, Vishay, Littelfuse, etc. are famous for them; Japan is also a major player in power semiconductor devices, Renesas and Toshiba , Fuji Electric and Rohm are well-known all over the world.

"The government plans to actively support R&D and infrastructure construction to seize the market for next-generation power semiconductors that is still in the early stages and build a solid industrial ecosystem," South Korean Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy Sung Yoonmo said in a statement.

As a result, South Korea joined the ranks of the United States, China, Japan and other countries, and all announced policies to promote the development of the local chip industry, including the manufacturing of power semiconductors.
